How To Find and Tame the Gigantopithecus in ARK Survival Ascended
The name Gigantopithecus translates to "giant ape" in Greek, and the appearance of this beast certainly aligns with the description, resembling our modern-day great apes, albeit with a closer resemblance to the Homo sapien species. Finding them on the island is quite tricky as they roam in only one area, but spotting them is easy.
As indicated on the map above, the Gigantopithecus roams the edges of the Redwood Biome in the center of the map and is generally peaceful in its approach. However, they can become aggressive if provoked. Fortunately, there are easy ways to tame them once located.
You can construct a Gigantopithecus trap to catch one, but if you don't have the resources on hand, your best bet is using the hand-feeding method rather than using tranquilizers. To do this, you'll need to get close to the conscious Gigantopithecus without making contact with the beast (as it will aggro if you touch it) and feed it the desired food (berries, Kibble, or other herbivore foods) from your hot bar.
We recommend using a Ghillie suit (as it reduces enemy visibility by 50%). If done correctly, the Gigantopithecus will take one piece of food from your inventory and initiate an eating animation, starting the taming process. You must wait for the creature's hunger to decrease before it can be fed again, a process that takes time, depending on the level and the food.
Using a flying mount is advisable in case you need to escape, as flying above the Gigantopithecus will cause it to give up the chase quicker than on the ground if it becomes aggressive. Repeat this process until the Gigantopithecus is tamed, and you'll have a very useful creature on your team.
How Is The Gigantopithecus Used in ARK Survival Ascended?
Now that you have a Gigantopithecus on your side, what can it be used for? Well, this creature is extremely useful in raids during PvP as well as general fights in PvE. Starting with its special ability, the Gigantopithecus can serve as a human catapult.
When sitting on a Gigantopithecus and pressing the alt-fire button (default: right click), it will grab the survivor with the blue crosshair appearing in front of the HUD. Clicking again will toss the survivor forward, which helps get over walls without destroying them. Be cautious, as this causes the Gigantopithecus to melee attack directly in front of it, damaging anything or anyone in its path.
Moreover, the Gigantopithecus excels as an excellent tank due to its high HP and the ability to wear any type of helmet. The Gigantopithecus can pick up shoulder pets for their benefits and buffs, and it serves as a highly effective gatherer, capable of gathering fiber, thatch, wood, and a decent amount of berries. Passively, it will gather fiber and rare flowers if farming these resources is your goal.
Lastly, it excels as a climber and a cave tame, easily navigating steep surfaces and dealing significant damage in caves while being small enough to avoid fights. All these attributes make the Gigantopithecus a fantastic Tame for players of any level.
